The Waste Management Phoenix Open is a nationally televised golf tournament, a part of the PGA Tour, held at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale, Arizona around the last weekend in January. The tournament was originally the Arizona Open, but was known for most of its history as the Phoenix Open until the investment bank Friedman Billings Ramsey became the title sponsor in October 2003, when it was known as the FBR Open.
Phoenix Suns Charities is the title sponsor for this year’s ‘Shot at Glory’ at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 1 at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the 16th hole. It will follow the FBR/Xerox Silver Pro-Am.
The contest is a unique hole in one event in which 25 golfers will get one shot to make a hole in one on the famed 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale.
If a hole in one is made, $1 million will be given away ($500,000 to the competitor, $500,000 to the charity of their choice) to the golfer on behalf of The Thunderbirds. If no one makes a hole-in-one, The Thunderbirds will donate $40,000 to the charity of the participant who is closest-to-the-pin, while $25,000 and $15,000 will be donated to the second and third place finishers, respectively. Each of the remaining participants’ charities will receive $1,000.
Former Suns players Cedric Ceballos, Eddie Johnson and Mark West will be there as will team mascot The Gorilla, Suns Dancers and Solar Squad. Participants will include war heroes, celebrities and sponsors as well as one spectator randomly selected by tournament officials just prior to the event start time and one Suns’ season ticket holder.
Each and every year the Waste Management Phoenix Open and hosts the Thunderbirds strive to improve upon all aspects of the event including what many of you believe to be an afterthought – watching the golf. Whether you’re sitting in a luxurious skybox on the famous 16th (12 new skyboxes have been added) or on a hillside overlooking the 8th hole, there are a million great places to hang out at The Open.
Thanks to the TPC Scottsdale’s fan-friendly design, fans don’t have to travel very far for a great view of the action. In fact, many fans prefer the ease and convenience of grabbing a seat on the hillside overlooking the 18th green, located not far from the tournament entrance. Other golf fans enjoy the less-crowded feel of holes 4 through 8 on the front nine and holes 12 through 15 on the back nine.
