The Mayakoba Golf Classic, Mexico's Only PGA TOUR Event, takes place on El Camaleón golf course at Mayakoba. The event features a one-day Pro-Am competition followed by a four-round Professional Tournament. The champion will need to overcome 131 of the world´s top professionals in order to collect his share of multi-million dollar purse.
On Monday, the Mexican PGA will conduct an Open Qualifying event for the four final spots in the tournament, which will have a total of 132 competitors when play begins at El Camaleón golf course next Thursday.
Including Wagner, four of the Mayakoba Golf Classic’s first five champions will play—Fred Funk, Brian Gay and Cameron Beckman. Also, three Hall of Fame members—Greg Norman, Jose Maria Olazabal and Nick Price are scheduled to compete.
A total of 40 players in the field are multiple winners on the PGA TOUR. Norman leads this group with 20 career TOUR victories followed by Nick Price with 18, David Duval with 13, and John Cook with 11.
The field also includes some of the game’s hottest players following the first month of the TOUR’s schedule. Currently, seven players coming to Mexico next week for the Mayakoba Golf Classic are ranked among the top 30 on this year’s Official Money List.
They are: Wagner (2), John Rollins (9), Harrison Frazar (11), Spencer Levin (12), Charles Howell III (17), Robert Garrigus (18) and John Huh (26).
